Our mission

The Small Party exists to make government smaller, more capable and more accountable while widening the freedom and opportunity available to people, businesses and communities.

Eight principles

1. Small government: do fewer things and do them properly.
2. Free people: protect broad freedom to live, work and associate.
3. Open opportunity: reduce barriers created by place, wealth or bureaucracy.
4. Strong communities: create the conditions in which people build local institutions.
5. Build the future: protect exceptional heritage without freezing Britain in the past.
6. Accountable power: scrutinise public and concentrated private power.
7. Evidence over ideology: make policies measurable, affordable and revisable.
8. Non-polarisation: criticise systems and choices, not groups of people.

The Small Test

We ask whether a proposal reduces unnecessary power, expands freedom, strengthens responsibility and is honest about its cost.

Small government does not mean weak government. Where collective action is necessary, responsibilities should be clear and performed well.

A positive programme

We judge policies by evidence and outcomes, not by who proposed them. We will represent opposing arguments fairly, state uncertainty and publish corrections.
